Recently, someone in my family decided it would be a good idea for us to begin our day with a short hike around the neighborhood. The plan was marketed as a physical fitness program beneficial to both humans and canines. Liza Jane and Grace Ellen were overcome with excitement at the news and couldn’t wait to pee in someone’s yard.
The event turned into a 1,000 meter Dog Drag. Remember the old westerns were they’d lasso the baddie’s ankle and have a horse drag him through town? Grace Ellen weighs 55 lbs. but has the towing power of a Cummins Diesel. She thought we were training for the Iditarod, minus the dog sled. Tattered knees, wrenched elbows, and dislocated shoulders later, we abandoned that plan and opted for leisurely strolls.

Waiting for That Rainbow
It’s been cloudy for a long time
I’m not talking about the sky
It might get worse before it gets any better
But one of these days we’re gonna see the sunshine
It’s easy to feel pessimistic
When it always rains on your parades
But there’s a new day dawning, I can feel change a coming
And one of these days we’re gonna see the sunshine
I asked the Good Lord for the forecast
And He gave me this reply
Keep lookin’ for the blue sky, waiting for that rainbow
Cause one of these days we’re gonna see the sunshine

Ah, you’ve been to Scotland then. One day we might see sunshine too.

A native of Alaska told me they had about 50 days of sunshine per year. That made it special when it did shine.

Thanks, Violet. I wrote that poem about 35 years ago for someone who was feeling down. It’s still one of my favorites.

Dear Lute Skywatcher,
I’m still chuckling over Grace Allen’s pulling prowess. I hope you and Connie have recovered from your skinned and tattered tushies.
Fortunately, I don’t have to take my white-haired pet for walks. Neither does he join me for my swims.
Watching for those rainbows and sunshine but so far am only seeing green algae.

Dear Poly Walter-logged Trixie W(T)F,
I think Grace Ellen could pull a locomotive. Going uphill she a help, but downhill is damn scary. I loan her to Jan and he can water ski beside you as you swim laps.
The algae is awful. Too bad he doesn’t take his own advice and drink a fifth of bleach.
Happy Junteeth,

Soo… can’t control the pooch, eh? Or is it because you had a spring in your step that said pooch thought it was a race?
And this story shall resonate with me all week as the forecast is most dismal!

Grace Ellen is stubborn and strong willed. I think she gets it from her human nanny. I wish I had their energy and enthusiasm.
Glad you liked the poem.

Love the poem! And the story about the pooches. Our dogs are less than 20 pounds and easy to manage… for the most part.
